AND WE HAVE A WINNER.... or not!

So, the match came down to the last hole between three golfers...Chris, Keith and Bob.  Going into #16, it was a dog fight that could have been won by any of the three had any one of them played the 16th hole even halfway decent.  A double and two triples were not going to cause anyone to clinch the match on #16.

To 17 we went, with Chris and Keith tied and Bob trailing by 2.  Bob's game left him after a perfect drive on #6...perfectly hit just in the wrong direction.  He seemed to go downhill from there and particularly on #7 where he put 2 in the woods.

To 17:  Chris misses a short putt, Bob makes a par, and Keith makes a par.  At that point, Bob was down by 1 to Chris, and down by 2 to Keith.  Bob announces he will birdie the last hole, tie the match up after Keith makes a bogey, and will win by virtue of owning the cigar.

To 18:  After tee shots, Chris is in the rough, Keith in the rough with a good lie, and Bob is in the fair about 135 yards out.  Keith hits to the left side of the green and gets some weird side-spin on his ball causing it to move left out of the bunker.  Still a tricky shot.  Chris hits some sort of 1 iron out of the rough and rolls it up to the front of the green.  Bob hits his 8 iron well past the front pin placement, but is putting for birdie.

Keith chips about 10 feet past the green, Chris chips to a foot, Bob rolls his birdie putt past, as it was his only hope of holding on to the title.  Ultimately Keith made a bogey, Chris a par, and the two tie for the Cigar.

Having no tie-breaker in place, the Cigar is being held by Keith due to his low round on the back nine....a +4 on the back nine.   That is a back 9 record.

Coming up:  a tie-breaker proposal/scenario.  Stay tuned.

  1. A great story. Felt like I was there. If I was doing the story, I think I would have spent a lot more time detailing the miraculous comeback that apparently took place on the back side. How is it that a golfer could be down by 5 strokes at the turn and actually take the lead on 17?

  2. I have a tie-breaker proposal. Considering the condition of the sand traps at Linrick, i would suggest that, in the event of a tie, the person who had to navigate through the most shots out of those sand traps should automatically be declared the winner. Just a suggestion!

  3. I THINK THERE ARE 2 POSSIBLE WAYS TO SOLVE A TIE. ONE IS TO SOLVE IT THE WAY THE PROFESSIONALS SOLVE IT AND PLAY #1 AND BACK OVER TO THE #9 TEE FOR A 2 HOLE PLAY OFF. OR IF WE ARE DEALING WITH ELDERLY (NO NAMES WILL BE MENTIONED), AND I RESPECT THE ELDERLY, AND REALIZE THEY MAY NOT HAVE THE STAMINA FOR ANY EXTRA HOLES. THEN THE TIE SHOULD GO TO THE SCORECARD BY TAKING THE 4 HARDEST HOLES AND TAKING THE LOWEST COMBINED SCORE OF THOSE HOLES. THERE IS NO TIE IN GOLF. JUST LIKE THERE IS NO CRYING IN BASEBALL. TIGER AND PHIL DONT TIE AT THE MASTERS. THERE IS A CHAMPION. JUST A SUGGESTION.

  4. in case the readers did not get the scores for sundays round, for some reason the scores were not posted, i can't imagine why. keith and chris shot in the 80's, bob horner shot in the 90's and dale shot a peep over a hundred. the readers would like the scorecard posted after each cigar match. thank you.

  5. If you really respected the elderly (no names mentioned) then the elderly would either play from the elderly tees or be given strokes. Either way, there would be no tie. As for the stamina to go extra holes, the elderly I know have the stamina to do that but, as I figure this, we pay for only 18 holes so in order to break a tie, we would either pay for the extra holes or we cheat the course out of revenue. I'd guess I'd rather suffer a tie than be considered a cheat.

  6. AS A CONCERNED READER OF THIS BLOG, I TOOK IT UPON MYSELF TO CALL THE LINRICK, AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO CHARGE FOR PLAYING AN EXTRA HOLE OR TWO IN THE EVENT OF A TIE AS LONG AS #1 YOU ASK PERMISSION FIRST, AND #2 THERE IS NO ONE YOU WOULD BE DELAYING BY PLAYING AN EXTRA HOLE.

  7. APPEARS THAT CHRIS CANNOT BE STOPPED, HE FIRED AN 89 IN THE POURING DOWN RAIN TO WIN THE TIEBREAKER MATCH. THAT MAKES THE LAST 5 OUT OF 6 MATCHES HE HAS DOMINTATED. HE POSTED BIRDIES ON 9 AND 17. BOB HORNER COULD NOT MAKE THIS MATCH. THE RELENTLESS DOWNPOUR ADDED AT LEAST 10 STROKES TO EACH PLAYERS SCORE, MEANING CHRIS SHOT A 79. WOW. HE IS GOOD
